Popular niches for Mobile apps – Developer’s guide

popular niches for mobile apps

Mobile developers come in 3 types. There are those who have a really good idea and know enough programing in order to develop their app. Those are usually ‘one hit’ app developers and can have an amazing overnight success or fade back into the programing world they came from. Another type is the developers for hire. These are people that care only about making some cash out of mobile programing and don’t have any personal particular aspirations to create their very own great app. Developers for hire can come as a single freelancer or as a company that specializes in app development. The third type is that developer who is trying to fine his shining star, or milking cow, (whichever metaphor works for you). This type of developer is the most interesting one since he’s constantly trying to re-invent himself, always on the lookout for fresh ideas and is usually the one that comes up with cool new apps that we can all enjoy and appreciate. For this specific type I’ve assembled a list of the most popular niches for mobile apps today. This might help you narrow your search for your next big amazing mobile app:

The apps we can all live without but just don’t want to

I like to call this specific niche – the useless fun apps. This specific niche refers to those apps that have no use what so ever other than make us lough or pass some fun time when we have simply nothing else to do. They are not actually interactive, so we can’t call them games and they usually have one or two simple functionalities. Under this niche you can find apps like – Autodance (for now available only is iTunes), that lets you make a complete full of yourself with style or one of my personal favorites - the virtual whip, which actually comes very handy when your friend is explaining why he can’t come for a drink because he prefers staying home with his wife.

The apps that make our lives easier

These apps are for useful functionalities, from very simple to very sophisticated. Under this category you can find currency converters, scales, flashlights, mirror, GPS and the list goes on. Today you can find an application for just about any functionality you can think of. This niche can be very profitable if you actually deliver what you’ve promised, but there are still two problems with it: just about anything you can think about already has an app for it and if it’s completely new, most people won’t know they can look for it.

Picture viewers and editors

One of the biggest uses we have of our mobile phone is images. We probably take and view more photos than we make phone calls. This is why this niche is extremely searched and profitable. As an image viewer you can see for example this Funny fails or funny cat pics applications (both by same developer). As image editors you have on the top of the list Instegram and some small developers offering varies image editing, rating and sharing.

Games

This is probably the biggest niche in mobile phones today and one of the most complicated one from the developer’s side. Designing and programming a game is not easy. So if you don’t have previous experience in this you’re probably better off staying away from this nich.

Informative apps

These are apps that provide information in all kinds of media – text, image, video and audio. Apps like dictionaries, feeders, song identifiers, TED Mobile, maps, where’s the closest Pizza place is and on and on. They usually require tapping into a big DB of which ever information you’re offering to provide or creating this DB yourself. The actual functionality is usually much easier – a search box and simple navigation though the app’s screens.
As you can see, there’s a lot to choose from. All you have to do now is find a niche which you can relate to, make sure it wasn’t done before (or at least wasn’t done too often or too well) and half of the work is already done!
