When webhosting service providers ask you to choose between Windows or Linux webhosting, which one do you choose? Most people choose the platform related to their operating system. Thus, if your computer runs on Windows, you are more likely to opt for Windows based web hosting while somebody whose desktop computer or laptop runs on Linux is more likely to choose Linux web hosting. But, does it matter whether you choose Windows or Linux web hosting? More specifically, how does Windows web hosting and Linux webhosting differ?
Following are
the 5 main differences between Windows web hosting and Linux webhosting and
situations where each is better suited:
-Linux is an Open Source Web Hosting System while Windows is a Premium Webhosting System
While Windows is a product of the Microsoft Corporation, Linux is a collection of webhosting system components developed by different individuals and made available without charge. This means that while a premium is charged for use of the Windows system in web hosting, no premium is charged for use of Linux in web hosting. The result is that Linux web hosting is basically cheaper than Windows. The hosted consumer, however, pays similar charges because of the staff resources required to administer Linux.
-Windows Web Hosting Provides an Easy Environment for Developers
Windows web hosting provides a complete suite of software that is necessary for developers. Windows suite of tools provides easy graphic user interface (GUI). The suite includes Microsoft SQL, Access, Excel and.Net programming environment. The result is that developers need not shop for other programs from external providers. In the case of Linux, developers have a harder time when coding. They may also need to get additional software from others sources.
-Windows Hosting Provides Easy Support
License for use of the Windows web hosting platform puts the necessary support at the disposal of the hosting service provider. This support is easy because the support staff works on a standardized system. This may not be the same for Linux web hosting because the software used is sourced from different developers. The result is that although Linux web hosting is basically open source and free, the savings are taken up by expensive administrative support. Windows web hosting is ideal for professionals and businesses requiring a dependable and easy platform. Individuals involved in experimental projects and creative people may prefer the customizable Linux web hosting.
-Linux Web Hosting is More Stable than Windows Web Hosting
This is not an absolute statement. However, because the Microsoft Corporation, owners of the Windows webhosting system, is always working to improve the system, upgrades are a constant necessity. On the other hand, Linux, being a system made of components from many different developers, rarely gets upgraded. For those who are looking for web hosting that is more stable, Linux would be the better choice.
-Linux is More Flexible
Linux is a more flexible system that supports many applications and other software including Perl, MySQL, PHP, PostgreSQL among others. However, it is not compatible with many Windows tools such as MsSQL, ASP and Access. If you constantly use these tools, you better opt for Windows web hosting.
And there you have it. Whether you choose Windows or Linux web hosting may depend on personal preference. It helps when you know their individual strengths and weaknesses.
Your products are great. You could search for updates and trends about them from search engines or websites. Use the most common. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteGreat post on this one. I actually never really knew much about this until after reading your post. All I know (or heard) is that linux is far more stable when it comes to web hosting and that Microsoft itself is using linux on their servers for security purposes. It was said that Microsoft engineers were not confident enough with the security of their servers. Then again, my info is either wrong or outdated.
