If you’ve got to jump on the train for a two-hour journey every day just to get to work, you’re going to need something to pass the time. If your brain’s not quite alert enough in the morning to face reading a book and you’ve not got any urgent presentations to prepare for, then why not pull out your iPhone and get lost in a game. We’ve picked some of the best out there while making sure to look for those that present a challenge and ensure longevity.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
This part of the award-winning PC and console game of the year might come with a higher price tag than most would expect for a game in the App Store, but it’s well worth it. The decision-making and strategy side of gameplay is excellent as are the visuals; so whether you enjoy the combat or politics of dealing with an alien invasion, you’ll be able to do it a beautifully immerse environment.
Stickets
Edge-online.com described Stickets as a game of ‘astonishing purity and longevity.’ It illustrates how simple a game can be and still demand attention. Almost like a boiled-down version of Tetris, players must place L-shaped pieces comprised of different-coloured blocks on a 5x6 grid. Three blocks of matching colours can be tapped away to make more room. Simple yet you'll keep coming back for more.Black Jack
If you prefer a more old-fashioned card game experience, why not opt for Blackjack from CasinoEuro.com for iOS. It’s one of the classic casino games and great antidote to boredom of those long commutes. And it gives the added excitement of the chance to win big money.Fighting Fantasy: Forest of Doom
If you’re a fan of Ian Livingstone and read the classic gamebook Forest of Doom, then this game is you. It’s essentially a digital version of the book with Malcolm Barter’s original illustrations updated to colour and an auto-map feature to make life a little easier. This is a return to more traditional form of gaming with the added benefit of computerised dice and no need to fold over all the corners of the pages. The game received a Metacritic rating of 86/100.Kingdom Rush Frontiers
The original Kingdom Rush provided hours of entertainment and one of the best examples of a tower defense game in the App Store. The Guardian even described it as potentially being ‘the pinnacle of the genre’. With that in mind, the guys at Iron-hide Games haven’t changed much for the sequel Kingdom Rush Frontiers. It still involves stopping wave after wave of bad guys from invading your castle by strategically placing turrets. That description belies how entertaining it is, however.
Angry Birds Star Wars
No list seems complete without an Angry Birds release. And while every mention of the game has become a divisive topic, there is no escaping the fact that it is incredibly fun and brilliantly styled. The Star Wars version has even become so popular that it’s being ported to consoles and handhelds. The Angry Birds are crossed with characters from the Star Wars universe and action takes place across a range of backdrops from Tatooine to the Death Star. The birds themselves are all given brand new powers never seen before, with the exception of the standard Blue Bird. The game has averaged a Metacritic score of 88/100.
